History unfolds with stories being told, some of these remain at the margins.
Marginal is a photography exhibition that draws attention and brings people to focus on the stories of social, political and human relevance happening in parallel, alongside and/or hidden from mainstream narratives.
In recent years, we have seen dramatic changes that have sparked mass migration, extreme weather patterns, disrupted ecosystems and unstable, volatile and dangerous political changes. The nature of these events has contributed to extraordinary social and political events in the form of mass migration, political upheavals and social transformation but also have suppressed, kept on the margin important narratives.

These are real stories that tell uncomfortable truths challenging social orders and governments being suppressed or kept at margins. Telling these stories is very important; they are part of our societies, our collective history but also, they question how much our own social and political sphere is dictated by the influence of chosen narratives bestowed upon us.

This exhibition let us ponder on  how much our history would change if we could have a greater access to stories and to the information that they may contain. And it also questions what it seems to be a conscious process of selection, its purpose and indeed on why there would be a process that renders a story relevant and valuable whilst leaving behind equally important stories. The public is invited to ponder on these very important questions whilst confronted to some of the stories that inhabit the Marginal exhibition but did not reach the deserved public domain.
The selected photographers, Chiara CeolinClaudia Leisinger,Jonathan GoldbergMareike Gunsche , Parveen Ali ,Wamaitha Ng’ang’a, draw our attention to some of these human stories, in parallel and/or at the margins of our societies in need of attention, care and social justice: the Roma communities in Europe, the eco activists community living besides Heathrow runaway, the child mothers in Tanzania and the stories of people living with HIV.

Marginal is curated by Cinzia D’Ambrosi, photojournalist and director/founder of the Photojournalism Hub.
